Nondestructive measurement of refractive index profile for holey fiber preforms.
A non-destructive technique is presented to determine the refractive index profile of holey fiber preforms. The holes are filled with index matching oil and the holey preform deflection data is measured. An improved optical path-length formula and back projection method is used to reconstruct the two-dimensional filled holey fiber preform refractive index distribution.
متن کاملDevelopment of Nondestructive Evaluation Methods for Ceramic Coatings
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are being developed for ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) applied to components in the hot-gas path of advanced high-efficiency and low-emission gas turbines, including syn-gas fired turbines. The objectives of the NDE development are to assess TBC condition for quality control as well as to monitor TBC degradation and predict TBC life during servic...
متن کاملDevelopment of Nondestructive Evaluation Methods for Ceramic Coatings and Membranes
Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods are being developed for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) and for gas-separation membranes. For TBC applications, current NDE development is focused on infrared thermal imaging methods. Compared with optical and other methods, thermal imaging is quantitative so can be used to characterize TBCs during their entire life cycle, from as-processed condition to s...
متن کاملNondestructive Damage Evaluation in Ceramic Matrix Composites for Aerospace Applications
Infrared thermography (IRT) and acoustic emission (AE) are the two major nondestructive methodologies for evaluating damage in ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) for aerospace applications. The two techniques are applied herein to assess and monitor damage formation and evolution in a SiC-fiber reinforced CMC loaded under cyclic and fatigue loading. The paper explains how IRT and AE can be used f...

Bulk and Rayleigh (or surface wave) velocities of ultrasonic waves in chromium coatings on steel were measured and an experimental correlation was found between the surface velocity and the hardness. Since qualitative coating evaluation is commonly made using hardnesses as a guideline, the possibility is herewith presented of using the so und velocities of surface ultrasonic waves for this purp...
